Like every year, Eastern promises KVIFF has given itself the exciting mission of bridging the gap between talented filmmakers and their potential partners, festivals and audiences. A wide selection of 35 film projects were screened across the festival’s three established programs (Works in Progress, Works in Development – Feature Launch and First Cut+) as well as the Odesa IFF Works in Progress selection. This showcase was held in Karlovy Vary instead of Odessa as a sign of goodwill and support for the Ukrainian film industry, which is currently suffering due to the Russian invasion (see the new).
Hugo Rosakhead of KVIFF’s Film Industry Office, said, “This year has brought us back to live pitch sessions after two years of the pandemic, and we were delighted to see the return of both our audience from the industry and creative teams well prepared for a real brick and mortar cinema.
In the Works in Progress section, the fiction and documentary projects have been merged for an additional year because, despite their differences, they possess the same artistic value. In this year’s showcase, a total of ten fiction and documentary projects from countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and North Africa were presented.
The jury – which included Denis Ruhdirector of the Berlinale European Film Market; Cosima Finkbeinersenior festival director and sales manager at Beta Cinema; Esra Demirkirancoordinator of the TRT Cinéma festival; Michaela Patrikova, sound designer at Soundsquare; and Polish producer Ewa Puszczynska – selected the dramatic feature film the loadeddirected and co-written by Amr Gamaland produced by Mohsen AlkhalifiAmr Gamal, Amjad Abou Alala and mohamed alomda, as the recipient of the Works in Progress Post-production Development Award, which consists of post-production services from UPP and Soundsquare. The jury was “impressed by the director’s courageous approach to tackling this sensitive subject against all odds”.
The winner of the other gong in this section, the Works in Progress TRT Award, which offers a cash prize of €5,000, was without winddirected and co-written by Bulgarian filmmaker Pavel G. Vesnakovand produced by Veselka Kiryakova, Alessandro Amato and Luigi Chimienti (To see the new). The jury awarded him the prize for “his strong artistic vision, his mature direction and his meditative way of telling a story, which creates a mirror for the viewer”.
For the Works in Progress Karlovy Vary IFF Prize, which also comes with a cash prize of €5,000 donated by KVIFF, the jury chose Endless summer syndromerealized by Kaveh Daneshmandand produced by Gem Deger, Eva Larvoir, Cedric Larvoir and Kaveh Daneshmand, because “the film pushes the boundaries of modern society and questions family love, and the jury believes in the film’s audience potential”. In addition, the jury awarded a special mention to the documentary Visitorsrealized by Veronika Liskova and produced by Kristyna Michálek Květová, “because it tackles the subject of immigration in a very unconventional and intriguing way. We consider the film to be fully accomplished and have no doubt that very soon the finished film will be hitting the festival circuit.
In support of Ukrainian filmmakers and festival organisers, KVIFF this year hosted the Works in Progress program from the 13e Odessa International Film Festival, who cannot stick to it because of the ongoing war. Eight feature film projects in the final stages of filming or in post-production, produced in Ukraine or in co-production with Ukraine, and selected by the OIFF selection committee, were presented by their creators.
The jury included Pavlina Zipkovahead of the Czech Film Commission; Petr TichyCEO of Studio Barrandov; Simone Baumanngeneral manager of german movies; Barbora Strussboss of MIDDLE POINT; and Alessandro Gropplerogeneral manager of When East meets West. They have chosen you are the universerealized by Pavlo Ostrikovand produced by Volodymyr Yatsenko and Anna Yatsenko, as the winning project worthy of the €10,000 cash prize, courtesy of Barrandov Studio. “The jury felt great potential in the whole project and also appreciated the author’s statement, in which he exactly defines the character of the film while attracting potential viewers to see it. If there is a certainty in the world is realizing ‘how important it is to find someone who understands you’, and that’s something no jury will dispute at all.
