EXCLUSIVE: In an intriguing partnership that signals the continuing trend of high-profile international collaborations in the film and television industry, Japan’s leading multiplatform entertainment company Nippon TV is teaming up with London-based premium media company Envision Entertainment to form a common list. The first will be a series inspired by the successful Japanese series Double booking, and a pair of manga adaptations.
The two companies will see their creators align their respective Eastern and Western sensibilities to combine for a series of scripted co-productions, mostly but not exclusively in English, that will blend these elements together with the goal of creating content that works for a global audience.

The first will be a crime drama series taking place largely online. The concept is loosely based on the hit scripted show Double booking, produced and broadcast by Nippon TV in 2020. This series took place during the Covid lockdown in Tokyo and took place entirely on computer screens, following a man who accidentally schedules two video dates at the same time, with dark twists and turns.
The new project will follow a cast of international characters who connect through the internet and use their online research skills to solve mysteries. A first season in Japanese set in Japan is in the works, with the storyline leading directly to other international seasons in English.
The companies also plan to develop projects based on Japanese properties and are in talks with several high-end manga publishers in Japan to source intellectual property. Two of these adaptations are already in preparation, they will be mainly in English.
Michael Nakan, Founder of Envision Entertainment, said, “Japan has long been a country the West admires from afar, capable of creating world-class content and developing top-notch intellectual property in its local market. We are excited to partner with one of Japan’s most reputable media organizations, Nippon TV, and to work directly with Japanese creative talent to create innovative projects that are organic collaborations between Eastern and Western creatives. We look forward to a long and successful relationship with Nippon TV to internationalize Japanese content and creations. “
Itaru Mizuno, Creative Director of Double booking, Production division, Nippon TV, added: “I have already witnessed a great chemistry that has taken place when the Japanese and British creative teams meet. It’s so exciting to see an Asian story become something universal through this partnership. We believe in creating a completely new series filled with elements of our modern world where we interact both online and offline. “
Sayako Aoki, Business Producer, International Business Development, Nippon TV, added: “The greatest asset we have are our in-house creators with their unique ideas and spirit of challenge who will be essential to this great opportunity. What we plan to do is combine a great story with an innovative format to deliver to the global market and I can’t wait to see how our story extends beyond borders.
